Golden Visa

The Portuguese Golden Visa program is one of the most popular in Europe and worldwide.

Established in October 2012, the Golden Visa allows non-EU citizens to obtain a special residence permit in exchange for a 5-year investment in Portugal.

Residence permit for investment

Any citizen of a third country - i.e. anyone except Portuguese and EU citizens, can apply for the Golden Visa after completing a suitable investment in Portugal.

The investment can be made in the natural or legal person who meets certain requirements.

Eligibility - who can apply?

Maintain the investment for a period of five years.

Spend at least seven days in Portugal in the first year and 14 or more days in subsequent years;

Requirements - What is needed?

Important: since October 2023, property purchases no longer qualify for the Golden Visa. This applies to residential and commercial property alike, at any value, and the former rehabilitation and low-density-area routes have also been withdrawn. The routes that remain open in 2026 are: qualifying investment funds (typically €500,000), scientific research, cultural heritage support, business creation, and job creation.
